Civil War Cannon

Echoes of the past deserve to be heard today…

Did you know that Hillside Cemetery is the proud home to one of the Grand Army of the Republic’s Civil War historic cannons?

Brought to New York from Fortress Monroe, Virginia by horse drawn carriage, the cannon was placed at Hillside Cemetery in 1898 to help recognize and honor those soldiers from Peekskill and surrounding towns who fought for the Union in our nation’s Civil War.

There were nearly 700 local men who wore the Union Blue.

The 9,000 pound cannon is in need of a foundation and a commemorative plaque recognizing the men who served.

Up until now all restoration and excavation has been generously donated.

Here’s your chance to claim your unique place in American and local history. Help The Peekskill Museum fund this historic project.
